DC needs councilmembers who will put people first. We see this during COVID more clearly than ever before and it’s why I’m running for office. This is a change I know you believe in too.

On November 3 you’re going to have another opportunity to shift the entire DC Council by picking two candidates to support in the At-Large Councilmember race. As of right now there are 24 candidates to choose from. I’m writing to share who I’ll be voting for in November.

Today I’m excited to announce that I’m supporting Robert White, Jr. (D) and Ed Lazere (I) for DC Council At-Large. Robert and Ed are the equity leaders DC needs right now, and they have the skills DC will need to recover from COVID, address our deep income inequality, and reduce violence.

Robert White stood with the people on Initiative 77 to increase the tipped minimum wage. He has fought for DC Public School students, including Washington Met, and has supported our seniors through efforts like the Golden Girls bill which helps with seniors’ home improvements. He also secured the right to vote for returning citizens who will vote in this year’s election for the first time. He’s willing to fight for equity, education, and criminal justice.

Ed Lazere is one of DC’s leading champions for racial and economic justice in public policy. DC’s budget is a moral document and as executive director of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, Ed has fought for more just budgets for years — and won. Ed has a wide and incredibly diverse coalition of supporters from all over DC who together have been part of the fight for Paid Family Leave and fair wages for tens of thousands of working families. He will bring this experience to the Council and in the coming years, we’ll need it.

The work that DC Council will face in the coming years is steep. The economic recovery from COVID, ongoing violence and community trauma, a school system that is still failing many students, housing costs that will displace thousands of families — these are just the issues that have come up in the last week. We need leaders who will fight on the side of vulnerable residents and working families. Robert and Ed are those leaders.

There are more than 20 other contenders in this field and I have respect for several of the other candidates running. Markus Batchelor, Christina Henderson, and Will Merrifield in particular are each dedicated public servants whose experience is valuable and impressive. I hope they will have a different chance to serve.

Robert White and Ed Lazere are the leaders DC needs right now. I’m supporting their campaigns to be part of DC Council in January. I hope you’ll consider joining me.
